Why do people say Made in Abyss is messed up? ›

Apparently the author thought there was one thing missing - the sexualization of children... In the first season you got some very questionable scenes - sexual violence on children, very scantily clad children, children getting to know each other's bodies.

Despite holding a massive fanbase, Made in Abyss has become rather controversial for its recurring presentation and themes of child torture, abuse, rape, and experimentation by the anime's villain.

A potential turn off is the gratuitous gore, abuse and fetishisation of innocent seeming children. Riko is wearing nothing fairly often in the show, Reg gets his genitalia inspected at multiple points during the show and there are a few scenes where children suffer in extreme ways, resulting in death some of the time.

There is some occasional moderate fantasy violence, including bloodshed, during fight scenes against creatures in the Abyss in the first part of season 1, after episode 10 it becomes extremely gory and disturbing. This is NOT one for the kids. Extreme and disturbing physical violence against children is depicted.

While a release date for Made in Abyss Season 3 has not been announced yet, fans can expect the production to take some time. Kinema Citrus, the production house behind the anime, has officially renewed the series for a third season, but the lack of manga materials has delayed production.

Later on, Riko learns from Ozen about her birth in The Abyss and that she was a stillborn that only survived due to the Curse-Warding Box. Ozen says that beings put into the Curse-Warding Box aren't protected against death, that they indeed die but are resurrected, now longing to venture into The Abyss.

Bondrewd - MADE IN ABYSS

We'll start with Best Dad Bondrewd, who is THE iconic villain of MADE IN ABYSS. Riko, Reg and Nanachi have faced the dangers of the titular Abyss before, but you can't blame an orb piercer for its actions; it's acting according to its nature. But Bondrewd is different.

Riko is an energetic and trouble-prone 12-year-old girl who wants to emulate her mother, a legendary Cave Raider named Lyza the Annihilator, who disappeared into the Abyss ten years ago.

However, Made in Abyss takes a different approach to its movies. While the first two movies are both recaps of the events of season 1 of the anime, Dawn of the Deep Soul directly adapts the events of the manga and takes place between the first two seasons of the anime.

Some examples of manga fitting these themes are The Promised Neverland, Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Made in Abyss. These stories include a horror element that comes from using the cute and innocent aesthetic to create a disturbing dichotomy and are not intended for children.

While the art and esthetics of Made in Abyss are beautiful, they hide an ugly underbelly of intense imagery, sexual innuendo, and mature themes that are not suitable for younger viewers.

In one of the most infamous scenes of the show, a young girl is seen bleeding from all of her orifices. This includes her eyes, mouth, arm, etc. She tells a young boy to cut off her arm in order to relieve her pain; we see him break the bone to make the process easier, which causes her to cry out in pain.

The world of Made in Abyss is wonderfully vast and fascinatingly detailed. It's a visual treat to observe Riko and Reg descend deeper and deeper into the Abyss, as the viewer is granted the opportunity to explore the colossal chasm along with the two determined adventurers.
