Why should it have to be? People who enjoy an anime for that sole purpose are just edgy teenagers, it shouldn't have to be messed up to be good.

What ACTUALLY matters is how the messed up parts are utilized for the story telling.

(I don't mean fanservice)

EDIT: I do NOT mean fan service gosh damnit

EDIT: STOP TALKING ABOUT FANSERVICE I MEANT THE GORE AND THE DEATH AND DESPAIR DAMNIT

I'm having a hard time to differentiate between the fanservice and the disturbing parts of this show lol but I'm mostly referring to the disturbing scenes in this series that were very well utilized and I'm not bothered by it plus I like how the author keeps the nature flowing in this series as a whole even if it's unsettling for most viewers, it just shows the stumbled barrier of riko and reg's adventure along the way. Even the deeper the layer goes, the darker the story progresses and these two must muster up their courage and persevere onwards, and as the adventure goes, that's where the world-building expands its natural beauty along the way and I enjoyed it throughly.

Like Riko being shown in less clothing than would be appropriate or her inserting various things into Reg's behind when she meets and "studies" him.

Mostly small details that make you feel "was that really necessary just now?" and could be considered fanservice for lolicons but actually it doesn't really matter in the end because Made in Abyss is just that awesome, I can look past some little weird details lol.

The anime toned it down quite a bit thankfully, the manga bath scene (ep 13) has a few pretty questionable panels...

But that's censored and doesn't looked like it's sexualized at all. I genuinely don't get how people thing it even has fanserivce.

It isn’t fanservice, but it is a bit jarring how okay it is in the culture for kids to be … exposed. Tying them up naked, looking in their pants, bathing together despite not being the same sex, etc.

As someone who reads the manga, it does have fan service. At the end of every volume there is almost always a huge nude sketch illustration of one of the female characters. It's okay to still enjoy the series but don't lie to yourselves about it. The story is still absolutely fantastic and the illustration at the end of the day is just a drawing nothing more.

I think there are a few scenes that feel out of place or definitely unnecessary. Just creepy scenes that don’t really add anything to the story. But I wouldn’t call it fan service just really weird and disturbing

in the anime, yes there wasn't any but in the manga the illustrations are not censored. i personally don't consider nude child bodies as fanservice as it musn't be seen that way. however it is a huge huge bait for pedos and just thinking that the artist drew this on purpose makes me feel kinda off.

I mean it does have some oof scenes but calling it "messed up" or "dark" will vary from person to person.

A little off topic. I don't think its really "fanservice" like many people claim it to be.

You might want to rewatch the show. I’m pretty sure there were scenes where Reg has trouble … getting things under control let’s say. If that ain’t sexual desire in your eyes, I don’t know what to tell you.
